The product is high quality, very tasty and we enjoyed it. The company takes care of their customers. We had problems with our delivery: the package with 3 cans of regular sardines arrived expeditiously (within a couple of days from ordering), but the one with Piri Piri sardines (3 cans also) never arrived (though Post Office tracking showed it was delivered). After being alerted by email, the Santo Amaro company sent me a replacement order free of charge, and this time they sent it by overnight delivery service, also free of charge. The package arrived the very next day! Thank you, as Piri Piri are my favorite sardines!

I ordered these the same time I ordered some King Oscar Royal Selection sardines with "peppers, garlic, rosemary and hot chili"; the King Oscars were also a premium price, but the reviews led me to believe they would be worth it.Oscar arrived first. They were something of a disappointment: the fish were so cooked they were mushy, and the taste of peppers was *barely* noticeable; I didn't even realize they had garlic until I looked at the package again and saw it listed. Not did I notice rosemary, and it was more like "Not chili". Even the sardine flavor was meh. I haven't opened the other can (it was a two-pack); maybe I just got a bad can, and others are more like what got rave reviews. To me it was as "spicy" as a typical Midwestern hot dish, which is to say, not at all. I guess that kind of makes sense, since King Oscar is a Norwegian brand and much US Midwestern cuisine and tastes were formed by Nordic and Germanic immigrants who settled there (they weren't afraid of bitter winters, I guess). So later, this 3-pack of Santo Amaro comes. I opened a can right away to check it out. As another reviewer said, there is a lot of olive oil in the can and it's hard to remove the pulltop without getting some all over (I managed to keep it just on my hands, but my fingers were *dripping*). But good news: the oil tastes really good. It's quality olive oil with just a hint of fish and pepper, suitable for saving and using in a salad dressing or a quick saute. Then I dig into the fish itself. As I say in the title, these sardines have integrity: I mean, there are actually recognizable tubes of fish body (minus heads and tails) that haven't been processed into mush. Also, they're kosher, sustainably harvested, non-gmo, etc etc.And they taste great! Not a strong fishy odor (I mean, for sardines, which ordinarily do radiate a bit), just good little fishes with a nice savory tang. Still not flamethrower hot, but that's fine; the pepper shouldn't overwhelm the flavor of the fish, but I did want it to be noticeable, and in Santo Amaro's product, it is. That's the Portuguese origin shining through.I also experienced a few fishy burps after on, as another reviewer complained of. But they weren't bad or long-enduring, and the delight of eating these sardines was well worth a couple of brief "reminders". I suspect it might have been on account of how much of the olive oil I consumed, not strictly due to the fish; high-fat foods can trigger acid reflux, which may be what have both me and the other guy "fishy burps". The solution might be to wipe off as much of the oil as possible before eating, and certainly not to add mayonnaise as he did. There's no need to, these fish are plenty oily and not dry like water-packed fish can be sometimes after you drain off the water.I will say that my burps did not include any burning capsicum, though the fruity flavor of the pepper was present. That is more of a problem when very hot chilis are mixed with high-fat foods (one issue I have with very spicy Mexican food is the combination of lard and peppers, which leads to "flame burps" -- far worse, in my opinion, than the fishy kind).Highly recommend. I changed my subscription to monthly from every 2 months after tasting them.

Great product. Love the taste and convenience. Now that I’m on a much-needed low carb lifestyle, this one really helps with protein and satiety.Buying again.

Taste fine but not hot and spicy.

My title says it all. They would be just as tasty with half the salt.

These were nice firm sardines there were 4 in one tin. The sardines had minimal scales and they had a nice kick to them for spice level. I did find that they were vary salty and for that reason I wouldn't order them again, but everything else about the product was spot on.

First time tasting sardines , they test like string tuna fish , which I love . Wish they had even a little heat would have added to them . All in all would by sardines again maybe try some others that might have real heat to them . Kathy

Enjoyed the texture and flavor of these sardines. I'll never go back to the regular stuff at the grocery store

I would prefer if the cans weren't the pull-ring type, and just required a can opener. The instant you start to pull the tab, oil pools up and out onto the top of the lid and there's a lot of oil in each can. It's very difficult to get the lid off without it "springing" back when it comes off, spattering reddish, sardine scented oil all over you and your surroundings. I find that grabbing one edge of the lid itself, not the pull tab, with wadded up paper towels (once you get the edge to come up enough to hold onto it) is about the only way to safely prevent cutting yourself and turning you and your kitchen into an oily, sardine scented mess. That aside, I'd definitely buy these again. They're delicious.

I was skeptical of the other reviews, but these did not disappoint. Okay, let me get the bad out of the way. The tins are smallish (almost like what smoked oysters come in over here in the States). At the current price, these are like $5 a tin. You can work out the value for yourself. The fish are packed in a delicious, salty oil, and they do pack a slight (very slight for my tastes) bit of heat. There was one pepper in the bottom of the tin, but it can easily be removed, eaten, or just discarded. There were approximately three fish in the tin, somewhat skinless, but not completely. I do not like the bones so I opened the cavity and scraped those out as best I could. But you will eat a few—now big deal. The first thing you notice is the smokey, salty oil. It is SO good. The fish themselves are also delicious, firm, and tasting almost fresh-caught. It is fish, so it has a fishy tasty, but it is not FISHY. It does taste ... fresh. The meat is firm and not mealy or mushy. Just really good. I ate them plain, but a splash of lemon over some salad greens would also be amazing.I am reordering right now because these took about two weeks to get to me. As someone that needs to also increase my B-12 intake, this is a delicious way to do it.

Not spicy, don’t let that scare you off

These are the best sardines I've ever had. I have a hard time eating sardines because they're on the fishy side, but I try to keep my omega 6 to 3 ratio down. I've tried many different types of sardines with various marinades. First though; they have to be in olive oil, or macadamia or avocado oil for me and these are in olive oil. Second, they are large fillets which I think makes them less fishy. In any case, I will surely be buying them again.

Great flavor, will order again.

If you are looking for good quality and taste then this is it. After our trip to Portugal getting Sardines that are at premium quality is not that easy. I wish Amazon had more options for this delicacy. I highly recommend buying them.
M
great flavor for these spicy sardines

I love Sardines, I love Piri Piri Portuguese Peppers, and my ancestors are from the Azores. So I loved these.

The canned sardines at my local grocery can make a person gag upon opening them. The taste is even worse. These sardines barely had a smell upon opening and the spicy flavor was a perfect compliment to the fish. I typically barely tolerate fish but these I can enjoy.

Santo Amaro 100% natural European Sardines in olive oil are hand-packed in Portugal. A red PiriPiri Pepper is placed in each can. The pilchards or sardines are wild caught and sustainably caught. I wanted 2 layered but there were only 3 sardines in the can. The taste was spectacular to me.
